Glendale police are investigating an accusation that the department distributed child pornography to a convicted sex offender.
Glendale resident Brian Hazlett, 43, a former El Mirage police officer convicted in a child pornography case, said the police gave him sexually explicit images when they released his personal property in May.
The police had items seized from Hazlett during a 2001 investigation. Hazlett eventually struck a deal with prosecutors and was placed on lifetime probation after he pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted sexual exploitation of a minor.He served six months in jail before his release in 2006.
Hazlett said he was outraged after he picked up his property from the Glendale police and found a compact disc he did not recognize that contained a slideshow of pornographic images involving minors.
“The defendant was horrified, sickened and angered to see images of child pornography scrolling across his screen,” according to a motion filed by Hazlett’s attorney on May 13 in Maricopa County Superior Court.
Hazlett said he immediately returned the CD to police. Now, he has asked the court to secure the CD as potential evidence that the department distributed illegal images.
