Belleville News-Democrat - Seger set to release CD

S4,E08: 5/14/07 (The Brother Egg, Vampire Weekend, Hallelujah Chicken Run Band, The Low Standards, TMBG, Elliott Smith)
First up, a fantastic cover of one of my favorite Magnetic Fields? songs, Portland?s The Brother Egg did ?I Think I Need a New Heart? from a free 23 track album made up entirely of covers of Magnetic Fields songs called Meaningless (myspace). You can download the whole thing there, but since it?s kind of a pain to download that way, so I?ve posted it on my server to make for easier downloading: Click here to download. Next, New York?s most exciting up-and-coming band (according to me anyway), Vampire Weekend did two tracks, which will hopefully be made available shortly when they release their first 7″ and digital-download EP, but for now enjoy “Oxford Comma” and “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa” (stream on their site). One of the things that?s great about Vampire Weekend is the way they summon African stylings in their otherwise unrelated-to-Africa music. To best illustrate this, we heard Zimbabwe?s The Hallelujah Chicken Run Band with “Mudzimu Ndiringe” from the quality, recently-released collection Take One (eMusic, iTunes, Amazon). Next California?s Jazz newcomers The Low Standards did “If You Play Nice” (which has a touch of Nellie McKay in it) from their debut Show Some Leg EP (iTunes). Then TSiMH favorite They Might Be Giants have a brand new album coming out tomorrow exclusively in iTunes (it comes out as a formal more-widely available double-CD in June) called The Else (iTunes)… Unfortunately I can?t say I?m loving it. I can say I like at least this song tho, we heard “Bee of the Bird of the Moth” which has the sort of good lyrics typified by TMBG. Finally, another post-posthumous Elliott Smith record was just released, this one is a two-disc collection of 24 rarities called New Moon (eMusic, iTunes, Amazon). From disc one, we heard the previously unreleased “Angel in the Snow”. This episode features clips from the past two week?s episodes of FAIR?s Counterspin, about the media?s reaction to the 1st Democratic vs. the 1st Republican Presidential Debates.

Apparently Nothing: “The Radio”

Well, the Box Social’s album finally came out on Saturday, and the Madison release show was a veritable cornucopia of local talent. Power-popsters Apparently Nothing were the first full band of the evening, playing a rare hometown set ripe with material from their upcoming EP. This song debuted in demo form on their website something like a year and a half ago and has been developed into the just the kind of song that can cut short a discussion about the sliding scale of hotness which determines how much you must pay for the Box Social’s record.

Piano Sheet Music

Piano sheet music is a printed musical notation for piano. Before phonograph and radio became popular, sheet music was used by musicians to make their compositions known to the people. Many of these were piano sheet music since piano was the most popular musical instrument back then.

In the late 19th century, piano sheet music became even more popular as parlor music became a massive trend in the US at the time. Parlor music was a kind of popular music that was performed in a parlor, a small room in a house where performers play a musical piece before an audience. Almost all middle-class homes during this period had parlors and a piano.

With the advent of the phonograph, radio and other modern devices that played recorded sound, the popularity of piano sheet music gradually faded.

Piano sheet music, however, is not totally out of the music scene. Song writers nowadays still publish piano sheet music on sheets of paper. With the availability of advanced computer technology, many kinds of piano sheet music are now offered in computer-readable formats. They can be easily purchased and downloaded over the Internet.

Common pieces are sold from $3 to $5, while a piano sheet music collection of most recent hits sells at around $10 to $25. Rare and old piano sheet music, usually of classical songs, are priced at about $50.

Free piano sheet music can also be downloaded from the Internet. They are mostly old musical pieces with an expired copyright, such as the compositions of famous musicians Mozart, Brahms and Beethoven.

Turn That Music Down!

Apple’s iPod business is feeling what Microsoft goes through being the OS king, though from a different side of the law. While hackers target Windows daily in order to do maximum damage, iPod buyers have been getting litigation-happy for such silly things as reduced battery life over a period of years and scratched screens–and now for the player’s volume levels. But is this just another frivolous lawsuit, or is it pointing to something we should be genuinely concerned about? Perhaps more important, is this issue really specific to the iPod, or is it common to all digital audio players?
