D&M Says to Shutter Rio Digital Music Player Unit

D&M, the maker of premium audio brands Denon, Marantz and McIntosh, said it will get out of the market for the pocket-sized music players by Sept. 30. The sector has been dominated by Apple Computer Inc.’s iPod line.

“(The) decision to shut down the Rio business followed a determination that the mass-market portable digital audio player market was not a strong enough strategic fit with the company’s core and profitable premium consumer electronics brands to warrant additional investment in the category,” the company said in a statement.

D&M, 51.6 percent owned by RHJ International, a holding company linked to U.S. buyout firm Ripplewood, will retain the Rio brand and trademark. But it was not clear what other steps it would take in exiting the business.

Nokia Says No Deal With Apple on New Music Phone

But Nokia said that because of the design of the new N-series phones, software developers could readily produce programs to allow the gadgets to use services like iTunes.

“There is no commercial agreement between Nokia and Apple to integrate iTunes into the N-series devices,” said Kari Tuutti, spokesman for Nokia’s multimedia division.

“But since this is based on a computer platform, anybody—including Apple if they so wish—can very easily develop this kind of application and offer it to consumers, via the Internet for example.”

Finnish daily Taloussanomat had earlier reported that Nokia would bring iTunes to the N91 model.

Tuutti said Nokia had already seen such applications in research labs, but it had not agreed any commercial deals.

“We are not making any exclusive arrangements with any music store, but believe that we want to give the consumer the choice of where they want to purchase their music.”

Music phones produced by Nokia, the world’s No. 1 handset maker, have so far been seen as competitors to Apple’s successful iPod device and iTunes service.

Motorola Inc.’s long-awaited iTunes mobile phone will start selling at major telecom operators by the end of September, the U.S. cellphone maker said last month.

BBC Targets Music Downloads in Internet Strategy

The publicly-funded broadcaster is testing software called MyBBCPlayer to let users download its TV and radio programing, and plans to use its powerful presence to take its place among Internet media giants like Google and Yahoo.

“Everything we know about the online world suggests that it’s the big brands—the eBays, the Amazons, the Microsofts—that punch through, and the BBC is one of the big brands,” Thompson said in a speech at the Edinburgh Television Festival.

The British Broadcasting Corporation’s Web site is the fifth most popular in Britain, according to Nielsen/NetRatings.

It already makes recent radio programmes available for post-broadcast listening on its Web site, and in recent months, 1.4 million users downloaded recordings of nine Beethoven symphonies that the broadcaster offered for free.

There were 60 million online requests for video footage following the London bombings.

Thompson said that people listening to BBC Radio 1 online could eventually click on a link to buy a song being broadcast.

The idea that “there needs to be a vast cordon sanitaire” between public service and commercial transactions “flies in the face of the way the public actually use the media now,” he said.

The BBC plans to a launch a trial incorporating parts of MyBBCPlayer next month, with a full roll-out in 2006. The plan is to offer on-demand TV and radio programing, live streaming of BBC channels, and access to the broadcaster’s huge archives.
