Bebo Valdes & Federico Britos: We Could Make Such Beautiful Music Together
Pianist Ramón “Bebo” Valdés and violinist Federico Britos have something in common: They are equally fluent in the realms of jazz, Cüban/Latin American and classical music. Without any instrumental companions, this bionic duo is capable of interpreting, in an equally passionate manner, a series of well-known Pan-American landmarks (from Gershwin and Lecuona to Jobim and Piazzolla) and a few neglected but extraordinary tunes, before summarizing its hemispherical message in the final but celebratory Cuban danza titled Together and penned by Britos (Uruguayan by birth and Cuban by injection) to honor and praise his memorable encounter with Bebo (Cuban by birth and Swedish by injection). Let’s put it this way: I’ve never heard any other piano/violin summit as pleasurable and delightful as this 2002 Floridian session, previously released in Europe by Calle 54, Fernando Trueba’s groundbreaking madrileño label. Or as coproducer Nat Chediak explains it: “This duet date appeals to the senses with the discretion of a hushed murmur and the sweep of a full-blown symphony.” (LT)

Sadly, most Americans only think about identity theft protection after they have been victimized. This is the unfortunate tradition of closing the barn door only after the horse has escaped. Sadly most of us install Firewalls, Antivirus software, and monitor our credit card transactions only after having lost tens (or hundreds!) of thousands of dollars. This is when we start to get interested in identity theft protection!
If you are one of the intelligent few that is genuinely interested in identity theft protection, after hearing the horror stories associated with ID theft, then read on.
First of all you should only carry the ID that you need. Identity theft protection is more effective when you take preventive measures to keep you id safe. For instance, you should only carry a credit card, and your identification with you.
If you aren’t driving, leave your drivers license in a secure place at home. If you aren’t planning on making any business transactions will require your Social Security card, then don’t bring it along.
If you have an old utility bill somewhere in your bag, or a piece of paper, postcard, or envelope that happens to have your personal data on it, don’t just leave it lying around. It’s unlikely that you would even notice it, if it turned up missing, so shred it and throw it away.
There is no reason for you to be craming old, expired credit cards into your wallet, or leaving them in old wallets that are lying around the house. Cut them up and dispose of the pieces. If you have a credit card that you rarely ever use, or maintain inactive bank accounts, close these accounts. Thieves may just use them, and you will be none the wiser until it’s too late.
Okay, so you chose a PIN that’s impossible to guess. The problem is, that you are having a hard time remembering it. So you write it on a piece of paper and keep it next to the card? If you do this, you’re just asking to be victimized. Studies show that in a significant number of identity theft cases involving ATM cards, the victims wrote their PINs either on a piece of paper kept with the card or on the card itself.

What makes organic gardening different from conventional gardening techniques? The simplest answer is that the organic gardeners choose to use natural or organic materials and methods, avoiding man-made chemicals to grow their produce. The two primary areas which distinguish organic gardening are 1) application of fertilizers and 2) controlling pests.
Natural fertilizers: Better Tasting Produce?
Though there is no scientific evidence that the use of organic fertilizers would produce better tasting produce, most organic gardeners would beg to differ. One might agree that with the notion that we are ingesting too many chemicals from our foods, limited use of chemical fertilizers may produce better tasting and higher quality produce. The use of organic compost as a replacement for chemical fertilizers is one of the more common way to fertilizer your crop. Other alternatives include the use of teas derived from plants, such as compost tea. The use of organic matter also replenishes the soil by increasing the organic content.
Rid Your Garden of Pest Naturally
Organic gardeners use of natural pesticides stems from concerns over pesticide residues on food, groundwater and in the soil. Many reports have linked a large number of health problems to exposure to pesticides, which has many consumers and producers moving toward organically grown produce.
So how does one combat garden pest naturally? First and foremost is healthy organic soil, which produces healthy plants that can fight garden pest on their own.
Other organic pest control products rely on extracts from plants, such as oranges and lemons. D-Limonene, which is the active ingredient in citrus oils, kills many flying and crawling insects on contact. Destroying the insect’s respiratory systems, an insect basically suffocates.
Another all purpose organic pesticide is made from the Neem tree. Neem oil which is produced by pressing the oil from the neem seed, does not directly kill feeding pests, rather it discourages insects from feeding on the plants that are coated, in essence starving the pests to death. Neem oil can be used on vegetables, flowers and ornamentals. Another beneficial aspect of using Neem Oil is that it is non-toxic to birds, mammals, ladybugs, spiders and bees.
