Ten percent of the 6-Gbyte drive’s price will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The drive, available for an estimated price of $109, will be sold through Amazon.com and Buy.com, Seagate said Monday.

“Seagate is proud to join forces with the Komen Foundation in its
mission to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease,” said Jim Druckrey, general manager of Seagate Branded Solutions, in a statement. “Breast cancer touches all our lives and we hope that consumers will take this opportunity to support the Foundation’s efforts by volunteering time, making a donation or purchasing a product that supports the cause.”

Seagate also said that it sponsored the Komen Race For the Cure , a 5-kilometer run in San Francisco.

In a separate, unrelated release, Segate said that it had begun shipping its 750-Gbyte DB35 series of drives to consumer-electronics manufacturers. Seagate announced the 750-Gbyte platform in April.

Logitech announced three new additions to its family of cordless desktops: the Logitech EasyCall Desktop, the Logitech Cordless Desktop MX 3200 Laser mouse, and the Logitech Cordless Desktop LX 710 Laser. only the latter product will begin shipping this month; the others will wait for a fall or winter launch.

M is a monthly music service announced on Wednesday at the DEMOfall conference in San Diego. It works with any Windows Mobile 5.0-based Smartphone and pocket PC. It is essentially a broadband radio that allows users to search for music by channel, genre, or artist. Users can’t search by song, making it slightly more like a radio than a pick-and-choose music player. However, the company’s extensive channel list hopes to supplement that.

“Think of this as a wireless iPod,” said Avikk Ghose, director of business development for Mercora. “If you want to discover new music, we have over 100,000 channels that you can find. The songs are suggested based on what users are listening to on our network.”

Users can tune into up to five other users’ music collections, making it somewhat of a social device. The other users do not have to be in the same proximity, like the Microsoft Zune sharing system.

“It works like radio,” Ghose said. “It’s non-interactive. You can’t search by song because Rhapsody and other services work like that. [That] licensing is costly and difficult. That’s why this is only $5 per month.”

Users with compatible systems can try M for free through October 31, after which subscription packages start at $4.99 per month.

Ghose said that in the fourth quarter of this year the company hopes to make their service available through more operating systems on more devices.

Called “Rhapsody DNA,” the new Real platform will be compatible with other services that use the Microsoft software, the company said Monday. However, the new e200 Sansa players from SanDisk will use the Rhapsody DNA software as a sort of offline cache of the Rhapsody service. Real also said it had worked with Sonos, which also updated its System Software 2.0 product to be compatible with Rhapsody DNA.

The e200 , a cousin to the existing c150 and e260 includes 2-, 4-, 6-, and 8-Gbyte options, for a maximum list price of $249.99.

The new Rhapsody-enabled version will come preloaded with a 30-hour selection of Rhapsody music, from EMI, Sony BMG, Universal, and others. The line will include the e280, an 8-Gbyte version, Rhapsody and SanDisk said. The e280 also includes a display for playing back images and movies, a digital voice recorder, FM tuner ,and a Li-ion battery with up to a 20-hour charge.

Music phones now sync with iTunes and Windows Media Player, store gigabytes of songs, and sound pretty darn good, to boot. External music controls and wireless headphones make playback easier. Only 12 percent of wireless phone buyers take their phone’s music player into account when shopping, according to analyst Miro Kazakoff at Compete, a market research firm based in Boston. Most vendors, as well as carriers, see that simply as room to grow.

When shopping for a music phone, pay attention to five things: compatibility with your music library, storage space, ease of use, listening quality, and comfort.

TUNES YOUR WAY Compressed digital music usually comes in one of three file formats: MP3, WMA, and AAC. MP3 is a universal standard. If you’re in the WMA camp, you may have bought music either directly from straightforward Windows Media-based music stores or through a subscription service. If you listen to AAC, you probably use iTunes and buy items from the iTunes Music Store.

First, the good news: MP3s play on every phone that supports music nowadays (though a few phones won’t play high-bit-rate MP3s ripped at audiophile-level quality.) The situation gets a little thornier with the other formats. Windows Mobile and Palm OS smartphones, along with Cingular’s Samsung SGH-A707 Sync, will play WMA files from stores or subscription services, though on Palm OS devices you must buy Pocket Tunes Deluxe for $34.95 (www.pocket-tunes.com).

Verizon Wireless’s V Cast Music phones play purchased, but not subscription-based, WMA files. Many other handsets play unprotected WMAs too.

Though Nokia models, some Samsung and LG phones, and all smartphones play unpro­tected AAC-format files (with smartphones possibly needing third-party software), Verizon V Cast Music phones don’t. And the only phones that play the songs you bought through iTunes are the Motorola ROKR E1, the RAZR V3i, and the SLVR L7. In addi­tion, they’re available only on Cingular, and ­ music syncing is painfully slow. Hence, since iTunes dominates the music download marketplace, many people long for a high-quality Apple iPhone, which of course doesn’t exist yet. (See my Expert View column for more on that.)

If you’re like most people, you probably manage your music in a PC-based jukebox. The Samsung Sync phones, V Cast phones, and Windows ­Mobile smartphones all sync up with Windows Media Player 10 or 11. With WMP 11 plus a Samsung Sync or a Windows Mobile smartphone, you can also sync playlists.

In addition, most music phones let you drag and drop your music directly from your PC onto your phone, with the phone appearing as a hard drive in Windows Explorer. That process can be slow, though, depending on the phone. A faster way is to drop your files directly onto a memory card, and then plug the card into your cell.
