Agere Launches Music Chip For Cell Phones

Agere said its chips would support music players with compact disc quality sound in phones that could have a total component cost as low as $30. In comparison the cheapest phones on the market with similar sound quality require about $100 worth of parts, Forward Concepts analyst Will Strauss estimated.

Strauss believes Samsung, the world’s third-biggest cell- phone supplier, will likely use the chips to target emerging markets like India and China where bigger rivals Motorola Inc. and Nokia hold more sway.

“This will probably be a new entry for them at the low end of the market,” said Strauss who estimates that cell phones are usually sold wholesale to service providers for about twice the price of their components.

Samsung had no immediate comment.

Nokia Announces Super Music Phone For US

Neither Nokia nor Cingular have confirmed the partnership. However, the phone will appear in the fourth quarter of 2006, according to Nokia. It also uses the UMTS network standard on the 850- and 1900-MHz bands; Cingular runs the only network of that kind in the country.

Nokia said at the event that the N75 will sell for $399 before subsidy. If and when Cingular picks it up, that probably means $199.99 with a two-year contract.

The N75 is even more Microsoft-friendly than smart phones running Windows Mobile. You can sync multiple music playlists from the desktop using Windows Media Player 11 or other applications. Although the N75 runs the Symbian Series 60 OS, it handles protected WMA music, including subscription services. You can watch video transferred over from your Tivo via Tivo Desktop Plus.

The N75 also has the best mobile Web browser available, and you can edit Microsoft Office documents – something you can do on Windows Mobile Pocket PCs, but not on Windows Mobile Smartphones, which only let you read Office documents.

Our Favorite Music Services, Part 1

No, these days you’re more likely to have to pay for your music in one way or another. Some music services still operate under the increasingly creaky purchase-to-own model. In this model, which seems to be a straightforward porting over of the way music used to be bought on vinyl, cassette, and CD, a listener buys tracks of music outright and then owns them. Except, thanks to fairly rigid DRM agreements, he may not really “own” the tracks, in the sense that what he can actually do with them is fairly circumscribed. The DRM can control where you can listen, what portable players you can use, how many CDs you can burn, and more.

The model I find more interesting is subscription. A listener pays a monthly fee (usually under $20) and can fill up his MP3 player with as much music by as many different bands as he likes. The amount of possible permutations is limited only by the total number of tracks the service in question has, and, of course, the customer’s bandwidth and the amount of time he can devote to downloading and listening. You don’t own the tracks, and there’s no pretense that you do, so the DRM seems annoying…but you pay your fee and you get all the music you need for the duration of the month.

Here are a few of the services we’ve looked at recently, in a nutshell. Click on the links to read the full reviews. It’s by no means a complete list; watch this space for part two of our roundup of music services in the next week or two.

eMusic
While I prefer to subscribe to music rather than buying it, there’s a lot to like with eMusic’s subscribe-to-purchase model. First of all, you get 25 free downloads with your free trial when you sign up. After that, you have to subscribe, but it’s a subscription with a twist. For your monthly money, you get to download a set number of music files—the cost depends on the plan you buy, but typically the tracks cost less than 25 cents each. The best thing about these downloads is that instead of DRM-protected AAC or WMA files, the service delivers unrestricted, unprotected, 192-Kbps, variable-bit-rate MP3s.

iTunes
Stocked with great new features, a vastly improved interface, and long-awaited movie downloads, Apple’s iTunes 7 is just one key step away from greatness. I think it’s great that Apple has added feature-length movies to the video store, though I suspect their high prices will keep buyers away. Apple also enlisted game developers to engineer iPod-friendly versions of popular titles, including Web favorites Bejeweled and Zuma. Finally, iTunes itself has received a major overhaul, adding new features and making much-needed improvements to iPod connectivity. For the most part, all these additions and changes are for the better, but iTunes and its embedded store haven’t reached perfection yet. The one huge component that’s still missing: a subscription service.

Nokia Presses Play on Another Music Phone

The Nokia 5300 is a rounded slider which uses 2GB MicroSD flash memory cards to store its music. The 5300, which will work on GSM networks using the 850/1800/1900 Mhz bands such as those run by Cingular and T-Mobile, supports a wide range of music formats: MP3, WMA, AAC, AAC+, and eAAC+. The last three are formats designed to deliver decent-quality music at extremely low bit rates, letting you pack up to 1,500 songs onto a 2GB card.

Otherwise, the 5300 is a respectable midrange music phone, with a megapixel camera, dedicated music control buttons, an FM radio, stereo Bluetooth audio and a 2.5-mm headset jack—that last bit is unusual for a Nokia phone. It’s of relatively medium size and weight at 3.8 ounces, and uses EDGE networks to transfer data at up to 236 kbps/sec.

The 5300 will probably have “national distribution” in the US early next year, said Nokia spokesman Keith Nowak. It will cost $320 before carrier subsidies; I’d estimate that to turn into $149.99 if a carrier picks it up.

Nokia also announced two other music phones not destined for the US this evening, the 5200 and a new version of the existing 3250. The 5200 is much like the 5300, but lacks the dedicated music keys and downgrades the camera to VGA. The new 3250 is, like the old one, an innovative Symbian Series 60 smartphone with a 2MP camera and swiveling design; the new model adds support for 2GB MicroSD cards. Neither phone will be sold here, Nowak said.

PCMag Says…
I always get such mixed messages from Nokia. Global product launch in New York? So they are taking the North American market seriously! Two out of three products launched there not destined for North America? So we’re still a sideshow to them! Nokia makes solid phones, and their new retail stores in New York and Chicago are a great idea. But they need a string of slam-dunk hits to unseat Motorola as America’s number one.

MP3tunes Upgrades ‘Oboe’ Music Locker

The basic Oboe Free service holds 1,000 songs for free. Users can also upgrade to Oboe Basic for $19.95 per year, which doubles the number of songs to 2,000; or to Oboe Premium, which allows an unlimited number of songs to be stored for $39.95 per year and was the version that MP3Tunes originally launched in December of 2005.

The free version of the service was also available in late 2005, although the new release fleshes out the feature set available to all accounts.
