Top Tip: Restore My Music folder on Windows start menu?
Question from tedpjr
“Yeah, I screwed up. On my daughters computer, which originally had two 40gig HDD’s, I had used TweakUI to move the default location of “My Music” from the “C” drive to the “D” drive where she had much more room. I then (stupidly!) deleted the original My Music folder from My Documents, and went on my merry way.
Well, here it is 2 years later and she started to run low on space. So I picked up a Maxtor 120g drive on sale and used Drive Copy 4.0 to move the “C” drive to the new HDD. Then, I made a new “My Music” folder in My Documents and copied all her MP3s from the “D” drive there, them formatted the drive and put it away(for a future Ubuntu experiment).

But the “My Music” icon is missing in action from the start menu and of course TweakUI now doesn’t even show that it exists. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to how to put My Music back on the Start menu (short of re-installing XP?)???”
AOL Music Now
All you need to stream any of Music Now’s 1.5 million songs are a PC (the service doesn’t work on Macs), a Web browser, and an Internet connection (preferably broadband, though dial-up is supported). Except for an optional utility that’s only necessary if you want to download tracks, there’s nothing to install; you can listen from any computer and from any locale—at work, a friend’s house, the airport, or wherever—just as easily as if you were at home.

New Decemberists CD, tour on the way
Products for Music Lovers
The first problem many music fans encounter is finding a place to store all those CDs (and perhaps even LPs). If your home or apartment looks more like a Sam Goody, you may want to think about investing in a Media Center PC. Using its user-friendly visual interface (which includes album art and track/band info), Windows Media Center OS is a great way to organize and play your music. The Sony VIAO VGC-VA11G is perfect for this type of person. Instead of scanning your shelves endlessly for the CD you want, you can navigate your collection from the couch, using a remote control. You can even rip your entire CD collection to electronic format and free up some space in your home by having a yard sale extravaganza. Your friends will thank you for it on moving day.
Portability is also vital to the existence of a music fan. Not having your MP3 player on a long commute is like sitting in a doctor’s office with nothing to read. PC users who haven’t joined the iPod status quo have more choices than ever.
And music player choices get even more enticing as more online music subscription services increase support for a variety of devices. But of course, a good MP3 player is meaningless if you have lousy headphones or earbuds.
Here are our picks for products to boost the quality of your music life.
In This Review:

Starbucks is among the first to sign up as a corporate customer with Mod. The Mod System will replace the underlying Hewlett-Packard technology that has employed at Starbucks’ HearMusic coffeehouses. The HearMusic locations, which essentially combine a retail store and coffee shop into one, are a component of the coffee giant’s multi-pronged approach to interactive entertainment.
“We build software to enable retailers to deliver digital assets like music and movies to retail locations,” said Mark Phillips, chief executive of Mod Systems. “Our first product is an on-demand CD-burning solution, which is funny because we use all of this digital infrastructure and output it in our first offering into a physical format.”
“We recently announced Starbucks as a [kiosk] customer and plan to work with any retail outlet that offers digital devices or content to consumers,” Phillips added. “We also announced that we are testing both wired and wireless scenarios as well as full digital delivery to mobile devices.”
The Mod platform was developed as an end-to-end digital commerce infrastructure optimized for wide-scale deployment. Retailers can use the enterprise software system to program content and digital displays as well as create interactive marketing schemes.
Mod offers a 1.6 million track music library with digital rights management capabilities. The “smart” system can be programmed to offer individualized musical recommendations based on customer history. Users can buy albums, singles or compilations by creating a custom CD or, in the future, downloading to their digital devices.
Since Mod Systems is a software provider, it is able to bypass licensing negotiations with record labels. Independent and major labels deal directly through the retailers.
“The idea is that retailers currently control the bulk of the commerce that occurs today,” Phillips said. “It’s natural for people to go to Wal-Mart or Best Buy to purchase a CD and we think they can augment their in-store inventory to sell you music, ringtones, and more.”
Three classes of target customers
Mod says it will focus on three categories of customers, among them traditional retailers like Hollywood Video or Tower Records, non-traditional retailers like Dunkin Donuts and “emerging lifestyle brands and retailers” like the Gap or Verizon Wireless.
