Music Download Service for Cell Phones to Launch in Europe
British firm Omnifone said it had signed content deals with the four biggest music groups in the industry and had agreements with 30 mobile operators in a bid to steal the thunder of the much-hyped iPhone made by iPod maker Apple.
The service called MusicStation will be suitable for 75 percent of mobile handsets already available in the market and will launch first in Sweden on Thursday with Scandinavian operator Telenor.

It will then roll out across Europe, the Asia-Pacific and Africa in the coming days and weeks. Omnifone is targeting 100 million phones in a year and can offer over 1 million songs.
“It’s hard to imagine a more compelling music experience on mobile than MusicStation,” Rob Wells, of Universal Music Group’s digital division said. “It works on almost any phone, giving consumers the freedom to choose whatever device they want (and) it allows downloads wherever those consumers are.”
Omnifone has also signed content deals three other major music groups: Sony/BMG, Warner Music Group and EMI Group.
Omnifone said the service would be available on all 2.5G and 3G music compatible cell phones, which currently accounts for approximately 80 percent of the handsets sold in Western Europe.
It will offer unlimited track downloads at 2.99 euros per week, or 1.99 pounds in Britain, which includes data traffic charges.
Omnifone Chief Executive Rob Lewis told Reuters that it would take between one and 15 seconds to download a track and that phones could store between 100 and a few thousand depending on the phone.
“We believe that by providing consumers with the ultimate music freedom of unlimited access to music, wherever a user is, on whatever phone they buy, MusicStation is delivering the most compelling consumer proposition in digital music today,” Omnifone’s Lewis said.

Country Music Publisher Sues YouTube
The company, Cal IV Entertainment, alleged that YouTube hosts more than 60 of the company’s copyrighted songs and accused YouTube of direct, induced, vicarious and contributory copyright infringement.
As with a similar lawsuit recently filed against YouTube by the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, Cal IV argues that even though YouTube complies with the DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act) by removing videos quickly after being notified, the site does nothing to dissuade repeat infringement.

“YouTube has failed to adopt and reasonably implement a policy that provides for the termination of repeat-infringing YouTube subscribers and account holders,” the complaint reads. “YouTube also fails to monitor works it [had] previously been notified are being infringed.”
The complaint comes on the heels of similar lawsuits against the video sharing site from the English Premier Soccer League and bluegrass musician David Grisman.
Cal IV’s complaint describes in detail the difficulty of both finding infringing works on YouTube and keeping them off the site once they’ve been removed. Because users are able to tag and describe videos in random fashion, the complaint says, Cal IV is unable to find and request removal of all its works.
The complaint also alleges that, even though Cal IV enrolled in YouTube’s Content Verification Program, which was ostensibly supposed to curtail future uploads of Cal IV’s copyrighted material, the company continues to find its copyrighted material on the site on a daily basis.

Music in the atomic age
Lyn Gallacher: Is it suprising that Heisenberg’s discovery of the Uncertainty Principle had such an impact on composers?
Robin Maconie: On the surface the idea of music dealing with uncertainty appears quite novel. There is, however, a connection linking the music of Cage, Stockhausen and other 20th-century composers with a number of paradoxical ideas that surfaced in ancient Greece around 500BCE, concerning certainty and uncertainty, whether the universe is static or dynamic. For music to deal in such propositions does not represent a radical change or redefinition of what music is about; it is rather the fact that they re-emerged and bubbled to the surface at a time when the world was facing imminent destruction. It is interesting to see how these ideas of certainty and uncertainty were handled by composers in the early 19505.
LG: You link it to changes in the theory of language.
RM: The Uncertainty Principle associated with Werner Heisenberg in the thirties is associated with research that led to the development of the atomic bomb, but we can also see it as part of a much larger enterprise that had to do with getting back to the first principles of everything: for example, the roots of language, or the origins of life. Underlying the Uncertainty Principle is the paradox that it is impossible to define these first principles in terms that explain how they evolve in time. The music of Stockhausen in the early fifties - and the music of Cage too, though in a slightly different way - is asking the same questions - What are the fundamental particles of music? How are they to be defined? - in order to construct music from scratch, progressing from atoms to molecules, and building molecules into new organic musical forms. Wittgenstein is part of this historical development because he too was interested in isolating the ultimate atoms of thought, a fundamental consideration for developing the first computer programming languages. These ideas were circulating among the intelligentsia of the thirties and forties, and for composers like Stockhausen they represented the way ahead. They dived in and did their best to swim with the tide.
LG: You compare these imaginary particles of thought to frames of film, so that the movement of thought is like rolling the film, but the content of thought has to be considered one frame at a time as a still picture.
RM: I think the movies had a much greater impact on the way people thought than even the best thinkers of the time were aware. Serious philosophers of the early movie era actually had a great deal of difficulty in coming to terms with the idea ot” continuous motion. They wanted to frame reality in terms of the movies, in effect saying that time happens in discrete frames, within each of which one can precisely define the location of everything. What Heisenberg is saying is that if you take a frame of time as a sample of reality, it is possible to determine where everything is located within the frame, but that it is impossible to determine which is moving or where it is going next, or at what speed. On the other hand, if you make your analogy with a sound recording, which is the opposite from a movie, because it is an impression of a reality in continuous evolution, one can drop the stylus on any point of a disc, but if the turntable is not moving, you don’t hear a thing. This discrepancy between knowing where something is, and defining it in terms of where it is moving, is the great paradox that unites these different themes.
