In postwar France and Greece, says Papanikolaou (modern Greek, U. of Oxford) popular music was dominated by discussions about what constituted a good popular song in which literary criteria often predominated. At the same time, in both countries there was a trend to set published poems to popular music. He argues that underlying both phenomena was an impulse to create high-popular music. The study is derived from his Ph.D. dissertation at University College London. Distributed in North America by The David Brown Book Company.

The newspaper’s online edition, citing people familiar with the matter, said MTV and RealNetworks, which runs subscription digital- music service Rhapsody, are joining forces in a bid to create stiffer competition for Apple Inc’s iTunes online music store.

Neither Viacom or RealNetworks could immediately be reached for comment.

Verizon Wireless, a venture of Verizon Communications Inc and Vodafone Group Plc, is expected to supply mobile distribution for the joint venture’s digital content, the newspaper said, citing one of its sources.

U.S. consumer electronics company Apple, which broke into the cell phone industry in January, saw its long-awaited iPhone handsets fly off shelves when the sleek, touch screen multimedia device hit U.S. stores in June.

As speculation mounts about when iPhones will go on sale in Europe, Nokia unveiled four new phone models including a top-end music and gaming phone, the N81, and a new version of its top profit generator, the N95 handset.

It also unveiled two mid-priced music phones: the Nokia 5310 and 5610.

Wal-Mart, the world’s largest retailer, said its new MP3 music catalog included thousands of albums and songs from major record labels like Vivendi’s Universal Music Group and EMI Group without copy-protection software, known as digital rights management.

Wal-Mart said it would sell the “DRM-free” MP3 downloads of music by artists like the Rolling Stones, Amy Winehouse and Maroon 5 for 94 cents per track or $9.22 per album. It said the new format let customers play music on almost any device, including iPods, iPhones and Microsoft Corp’s Zune portable media player.

The announcement comes as major record labels debate whether dropping DRM will hurt digital music sales or encourage piracy. Copy protection software prevents unauthorized copying of a digital song bought from an online store, but it also limits where an owner can listen to it.
