Magowan (social anthropology, Queen’s U., Belfast) considers the connection between songs and emotions in women’s funeral laments from the Yolngu people of the north east Arnhem Land, Australia. She explores how sensory awareness of the environment creates a sense of song and sentiment and specific ways that the senses shape the songs and mediate ritual meaning and feeling. Specifically, she looks at ecology, emotion, and sensory awareness; women’s ritualized sentiment and the performance of emotion; and the adaptation of ancestral forms in the global arena of Christianity. She also describes how children experience the environment in song and men’s singing and dancing. Her fieldwork was conducted between 1990 and 2000.

Nurturing the next generation of music makers

For almost every music teacher, having a student become a concert artist is a rarity. Why then do so many of us make that our initial goal for every student that walks in the door? Perhaps we need to rethink exactly what it is that we teach. It may be that learning to sing or play an instrument is only the tip of the iceberg.

Of course, I want my students to play well and am constantly challenging them to raise their standards, to develop their technique to be able to express whatever the music demands and to broaden their interpretive skills to create a sound palette that communicates the composer’s intentions. Just as importantly, I hope they love their lessons, enjoy making music and feel confident in their performing abilities and problem solving skills.

Black women and music; more than the blues

African American music in cultural perspective

ML82

Hayes ( music, U. of North Texas) and Williams, an independent scholar and jazz saxophonist, compile 10 essays on the contributions of black women to music, and their experiences relating to race and gender. The studies consider the historical and current experiences of black women in rap and hip-hop, art music, jazz, musical theater, electric blues, women’s music festivals, and gospel music tributes. They aim to correct the imbalance in the study of black women’s musical experiences that often stresses only the blues. Individual women discussed include Leontyne Price, Edna Tatum, and Harriet Gibbs Marshall, among others. Contributors are scholars of music, African studies, women’s studies, and others from the US and UK.

How We Make Music

Marvin Robertson’s new book, How We Make Music, is a 24-page picture book designed for pre-school and elementary school children. It is clear throughout the book that Robertson has not lost touch with the seeds of musical curiosity that lie sleeping in all young children. With vibrant photographs and simple, readable text, the author defines and portrays various musical instruments. Many of the pictures show young children playing instruments and much of the text is designed to elicit interaction by asking questions, such as “What songs can you sing?” and “Would you like to play an instrument?”

The book is organized into six short sections according to instrument families (such as strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion) and includes a section on making music in groups. For easy reference, technical terms, such as reed and conductor are highlighted in the text and defined in a glossary at the end of the book. The author also thoughtfully provides suggestions for further reading and a list of interesting websites designed specifically for children who want to learn more about music.

This book is an accessible teaching tool that can be used as a springboard to initiate or reinforce lessons about music and the variety of ways we can create it. The pictures and text are engaging for young children, but older students may long for more detail, such as labels for the different parts of the instruments or descriptions of specific techniques a musician uses to produce sound. To fully bring the book to life, one may want to use it with other visual displays, listening activities or live instrument demonstrations. Teachers, especially teachers of minorities, should be aware that, although the photographs in the book do show some multi-ethnic sensitivity, African-American representation is somewhat limited.

Robertson believes that “every child has a right to and can benefit from learning music
