Loudon Wainwright III: Strange Weirdos: Music from and inspired by the film Knocked Up

Fair disclosure: I haven’t yet seen Knocked Up before writing this review. No problem. The songs Loudon Wainwright III and producer and often collaborator Joe Henry offer here stand on their own perfectly well.

From the opening note it is obvious this is technically the best sounding album Loudon has ever made. Henry’s production is vibrant and richly detailed, never getting cluttered or too cute. The audio is glorious. Sequencing is smart as no two similar songs abut each other along the way.

Napster Moves to Web-Based Music Playback

The move is intended to open up the service and attract more paying subscribers by making the Napster platform more flexible and compatible with any Internet-enabled device.

Before now most Napster subscribers could only listen to their music after downloading the Napster software application on to their personal computers. This is similar to a model currently used by Apple Inc’s iTunes Music Store, which is the market leader with more than 70 percent of all digital music sales.

“With this new platform Napster can easily be integrated into consumer electronics devices or integrated into other Web sites such as social networking sites,” said Christopher Allen, chief operating officer at Napster.

Napster sells a subscription service for $10 to $15 a month where users can stream or download an unlimited number of songs from its 5 million-strong library. But Napster’s and other music subscription services have so far lagged behind larger rival iTunes, which uses a more traditional buy-to-own model. Itunes sells songs as permanent downloads at 99 cents each.

Allen said Napster is getting set for a turning point in the digital music industry in 2008 as major record companies make more music available without copy protection software known as digital rights management (DRM). He forecast that, by the end of next year, the unprotected MP3 digital format will have become standard with major music companies and retailers. So far, only Universal Music Group and EMI Group have been selling music without DRM.

“When you can take the same tracks you purchased on Napster or other services and play them on your iPod or mobile phone, it will help to increase the exposure and the value of subscription services as the market opens up,” Allen said.

Mondo Mint Digital Music Station

Here’s how the system works: Two traditional stereo shelf speakers connect to an amplifier/iPod dock, which communicates with a second wireless iPod dock that uses 2.4-GHz range RF and proprietary technology to deliver music to the speakers within a range of 100 feet. Since the wireless dock can’t connect to the speakers independently, and since the remote doesn’t navigate the content of your iPod (it handles only power, source, and volume controls), the usefulness of the Mint’s wireless transmission is questionable. The wireless dock could be on your desk and the speakers on nearby shelves, but you’d still need to use your iPod to move through tracks, and the wireless listening experience is limited to the distance at which the speakers can be heard, regardless of the 100-foot range.

The 70-watt speakers are wood-enclosed, with 4-inch aluminum cone woofers and 1-inch neodymium textile tweeters. They measure 5.6 by 7.0 by 8.9 inches and weigh 5.5 pounds each. An 8-foot speaker cable terminates in banana-type connectors to the amplifier, which measures 8.3 by 5.3 by 2.1 inches. The top of the amp houses an iPod dock; in front of that is a control panel. Controls include Power, Mute, iPod, USB, Wireless Audio, Line In, and Volume. The silver design makes the amp look a lot like an Apple TV. Connectivity options on the rear panel include USB, 3.5mm line-in (cable included), antenna (for wireless communication with the dock), left and right speaker connectors, and the power cable connector.

The wireless dock is small, white, and square, with an iPod connector in its center and volume and mute controls residing on the front. A white 5-volt AC adapter connects in the back, and upon powering up, the dock should already be paired with the amp. If, however, the unit is not paired—as mine wasn’t—you’ll need to pair manually. Have the dock and the amp close to each other and hold down the Wireless Audio button on the amp until it blinks rapidly, then hit the reset button on the underside of the wireless dock. When pairing is successful, the small light on the wireless dock becomes a steady green (when things go awry, it flashes red). One of the Mint’s real shortcomings is that it lacks not only of audio-out on the wireless dock (for multiple listening zones) but an aux-in option—the wireless dock works only with iPods. Sure, there’s an aux-in port on the amp, but that won’t help you go wireless.

Worth mentioning a second time because it’s so frustrating: The included remote offers no iPod navigation, so even though it’s docked, you still need to touch your iPod to navigate through your tracks. The remote works only with the main amplifier and has power, mute, volume, and source controls (to choose between iPod, USB, Wireless Audio, and Line In). It will control the above parameters on an iPod that’s in the wireless dock—but only when you’re pointing the remote at the amplifier.

"Apa salah Baliku?" : popular music and the 2002 Bali bombings

Introduction

On the evening of 12 October 2002 a series of bomb blasts destroyed Paddy’s Bar and the Sari Club in Bali’s Kuta nightclub district, an area frequented mostly by tourists from Western countries and symbolic of what many Balinese see as one of the worst excesses of a demoralizing tourism industry. The death toll was 202; the bombings were eventually proven to be the work of Islamist radicals based in Java. For Bali, the repercussions were immediate and drastic. On an island where tourism had been allowed to become a major source of income, the departure of tourists and downturn in tourist arrivals caused widespread economic hardship. The bombings also engendered cultural, judicial, political, religious, and social reactions that continue to affect the lives of Balinese people. The subsequent internationally reported trials of the bombers kept these reactions alive, leading to a literature through which both Balinese and non-Balinese attempt to come to terms with what have come to be called “the Bali bombings” (for example: Allen and Palermo; Mi; Anggraeni; Atkinson; Bali Travel News; Cadzow; Chalmers; Chulov; Financial Review,, Hill; Howe; Juniarta; Lindsay; McCartney; de Neefe; Nguyen and Richter; Powell; Pringle; The Sydney Morning Herald; Widiadana).

The search for potential reasons for the bombings constitutes a major topic of this literature and covers a range of ways of thinking. Some writers discuss the bombings as specifically anti-American (Mi) or blame them on the CIA as an attempt to force Indonesia into an international anti-terrorist stance (Masters). Others, picking up on statements made by Javanese bombers Amrozi and Samudra during their trims, interpret them as against Western tourism in general (Lindsay). Some refer to the bombings as Islamic warnings to Australia to stay clear of US intentions to go to war against Iraq or, because 88 Australians were killed in the blasts, as an Indonesian payback for Australia’s part in assisting the East Timorese to gain independence from the Indonesian Republic in 1999 (Atkinson). Looking within Indonesian politics, writers link the bombings to ongoing inter-ethnic and inter-religious conflict in Indonesia, especially the long-term stand-off between Bali (a Hindu enclave) and Java (like the rest of Indonesia, Muslim) (Ali; Anggraeni; Juniarta; Pringle). Some see them as only one in an ongoing series of terrorist acts in Indonesia (Budiyarso, Rosyid and Sujatmiko). Other writers discuss the proposal that the bombings were an attempt to unsettle Megawati Sukarnoputri’s presidency of Indonesia (Atkinson). Another reading of the bombings is to interpret them as disasters through which the supernatural realm warned the Balinese that they had allowed their world to lose focus, that cosmic order had been disturbed (Anggraeni). It is this reading which informs this discussion of pop songs about the bombings and which gives rise to Eka Jaya’s song lyric used as the title of this paper–”Apa salah Baliku?” (”What did my Bali do wrong?”).
