MySpace Gets into Music Marketing
The site, dubbed MySpace Transmissions, kicked off this week with selections from James Blunt, the singer-songwriter best known for his ubiquitous 2005 single “You’re Beautiful.”
The page currently gives users the option to listen to five songs from Blunt’s latest album in their entirety. They can then purchase the whole album for $13.99 via lala.com, and receive digital MP3 copies of the songs as well as a hard copy of the album in the mail. Lala.com does not currently support the iPhone or the recently announced third generation iPod Nano, iPod Classic and iPod Touch, however.

The Blunt offering is powered by lala.com in partnership with his music label, Custard/Atlantic Records, according to a notice on the site, but MySpace does not have an exclusive partnership with lala.com, a MySpace spokeswoman said. MySpace is also not partnering with any particular music labels on the venture. It is “open to anyone,” she said.
Lala.com did not respond to inquiries about its involvement.
Blunt is also featured on six brief videos, produced by MySpace, where he discusses his new album, commercial success, his song “1973,” MySpace, his place in radio, and how he buys music.
MySpace will announce plans for additional artists in the coming weeks, though “the frequency has not yet been determined,” a spokeswoman said. In the meantime, it is soliciting suggestions on the Transmissions site from members.
“Artists cannot submit their own material,” she said.
As more content is added, it will be archived and searchable on Transmissions and via MySpaceTV, according to MySpace.
