Yahoos make Britney most-searched term
Bereft of any new music to promote, Britney Spears was nevertheless the hottest thing on the Internet this year, judging from Yahoo!’s annual list of popular search terms. Of course, a surge in online voyeurs seeking recently posted pictures of Britney sans panties didn’t hurt. But a Yahoo! spokeswoman said “Britney” had the title of No. 1 search term sewed up even before the risque photos surfaced.
Others in the top 10: Shakira, Jessica Simpson, Beyonce Knowles, Chris Brown, Pamela Anderson and Lindsay Lohan.

Robbie Williams ( left), that unholy combination of Arthur Askey and Tom Jones, enjoys the eighth No 1 album of his solo career (equalling David Bowie’s tally) with the lamentably titled Rudebox; those cartoon goths of the moment My Chemical Romance are at No 2 with The Black Parade (gosh!); Meat Loaf finds entirely new levels of bluster (not as enjoyable as it sounds) at No 3; and Rod’s at No 4, leading the end-of-pier singalong of “rock classics”, with his fifth US No 1 album.

The Third Concerto opened to a finely structured orchestral tutti - a little clipped perhaps, but never overstated. Here Schiff passed on the frills and toughened his act for some fairly gritty dialogue, although the cadenza again witnessed wildly quivering jowls and a certain degree of rhetorical overkill. The Largo inspired numerous pretty observations but although the Rondo was nicely inflected, the actual coda could have been even crisper, more witty. However, by now I was beginning to tire at what seemed more a superficial striving for the effect than inward conviction; I longed for something simpler, stronger, more direct and less reliant on the powder and paint of pianistic cosmetics. Schiff held lovingly to the first chord of the Fourth Concerto, a telling augury of what lay in store - a sight-seers survey, guiding us every note of the way with jabbing left-hand emphases, numerous instances of exquisite tonal sculpture but too much interpretative waffle. Even Sanderling’s gruff opening to the Andante con motto - swift, scalding and unceremonious though it was - seemed something of a failed admonition: Schiff’s entrance was minutely, maddeningly delayed, a coquettish ploy going proxy for humbling prayer. The finale was more elegant than exuberant but very much “of a piece” with what we’d heard all evening: tasteful playing to the gallery (Schst and Fifth Piano Concertos, RFH (0171-928 8800) on 11 Oct

MUSIC:
Passion is effectively a ” musical” without songs. Passion feels through-composed, though much of it is not sung or underscored. Passion is stream of consciousness, dream-like in its narrative flow. Passion is at once the most febrile and effulgently lyrical of Stephen Sondheim. All of which might just explain why it appears to have divided even the fully paid-up members of his appreciation society.
Of course, this excellent cast album offers only selective bites of James Lapine’s eloquent book as it relates to Sondheim’s music and lyrics. But even so, try pinpointing where the one ends and the other begins.

Perhaps the most notable aspect of this show is the degree to which it has refined the relationship between that which is spoken and that which is sung. Passion is songful. Like the emotions it chronicles, this “rhapsody” on the power of unconditional
