Chi boy beats a path to drumming finals

Chicago native Derrick Nicholson, 19, recently was hailed as one of the nation’s best drummers. After three months of competing in Guitar Center’s Drum Off 2006, a national talent search, Nicholson is one of 21 drummers who advanced from the original pool of 5,000 talented drummers to compete in the third tier of the nation’s most prestigious drum competition.

The regional finals are Dec. 6 in Chicago, where Nicholson will face four other finalists for the chance to advance to the national finals in Hollywood. Top prizes amount to $40,000.

R&B vocalist and former “American Idol” Fantasia will return Dec. 12 with her self-titled sophomore album. The disc boasts collaborations with producers Missy Elliott, Swizz Beatz and Babyface, as well as songwriters Diane Warren and Sean Garrett, among others. Lead single “Hood Boy” features Big Boi of OutKast.

“I’ve let go of things from the past and I’m having a good time,” says Fantasia of the new offering. “Now I’m on a whole different level … and I let everyone know that I’ve moved on from where I was.”

I had posted this question a few days ago, but will now try it again. I would like to know if anyone can tell me if the CD by Yoryios titled Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee was released or is to be released in Canada. I live in a small town in Ontario, Canada. I have asked in Cornwall, a small city in close proximity to my town. Also, the nearest large city is Ottawa. I have also checked a couple of music stores there. I do have family in Toronto, who could pick up this CD for me, if it should be available. I am very anxious to have this CD, so any info would be truly appreciated. Thanks. Pearl.

1 (4) SCISSOR SISTERS I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’ (Polydor)

Palacios’s own singing voice is a reedy mezzo, and a lovely instrument for her repertoire of 17th- and 18th-century songs from Latin America. But her brief spoken introductions were neither clear nor very helpful even when you could make out what she was saying, especially in the first half, where the order of songs was not as printed in the programme. They were mainly graceful or lively songs with religious words, set for any number of voices from one to five, in which Palacios was joined by an array of well-contrasted singers, all performing in a natural, vigorous way. Especially distinctive among them was Carlos Godoy, a very high, light tenor - just a bit like a young Hugues Cuenod - who made the sweet, easy kind of sound you never hear from a British tenor.

In the band of 10 assorted strings, winds and plucked instruments, the second fiddler doubled both as a very high tenor and as a falsettist - he was very much a character singer rather than a beautiful voice, and he threw himself about a lot. All the players doubled as chorus in certain numbers, and the cellist - a rather reserved-looking but very pretty girl - showed surprising aplomb in folkloric solos, which she belted out in a chest voice. One religious song had sections sung by three singers in the squawky tone that Musica Reservata used to cultivate 20-odd years ago.

But it was all very confusing, because most of us, probably, lost track of the programme midway through the first half. Not only was it hard for non-Spanish speakers to know what was being sung, but beyond names and very vague dates, and the fact that many of the songs were about the Nativity, we had no idea of the original circumstances of the music’s composition or performance. The programme book had a very fanciful but not easily understood statement of the Camerata’s aims, and nothing about the musical background of its repertoire.

But in terms of establishing himself as a musical force to be reckoned with and the artist that everyone was talking about, the evening belonged to Chicago native and hip-hop innovator Kanye West.

The triple-threat rapper, producer and songwriter claimed only three of the almost-unprecedented 10 nominations stemming from his debut album, “The College Dropout,” including best rap song and best rap album. He lost the major prizes for best new artist and Song and Album of the Year.

But West stopped the show with his uplifting performance of the hit “Jesus Walks” — “I feel like I’ve been saved!” actor and presenter Kevin Bacon exclaimed immediately afterward — and his acceptance speech for best rap album was one of the most memorable in Grammy history.

“When I had my accident, I found out that nothing in life is promised except death,” West said. “If you have the opportunity to play the game of life, you need to appreciate every moment.”
