Conductor John Wesley Strickler will dip into the musical palette of the Topeka Symphony Orchestra to paint an evening of ” Musical Portraits.”
I
f a picture is worth a thousand words, then a painting should inspire at least a thousand musical notes or even a full-blown symphony.
MUSIC:
But one can normally trust Bernard Haitink to take a more considered view, and that’s how his new version of the Third Symphony comes across. Traditional modifications of tempo that don’t make sense to him are simply ignored. Instead, his is a performance that moves and breathes according to its own laws: the long, ardent opening theme rises and falls like a great, slow wave; the pace of the gentler second movement seems just as beautifully judged - mobile but subtly flexible. So this is a performance of real musical insight - but what about expressive engagement? Well, Haitink and the Boston Symphony Orchestra are hardly inexpressive, and there’s some lovely dark colouring in Brahms’s moodier pianissimos.

Elsewhere, though, there’s a faceless, anonymous quality, especially in some of the wind solos. And, while it sometimes glows, this Brahms Three never quite bursts into flame.
But an intense, inward glow is just what the Alto Rhpasody needs, and Haitink seems to get much closer to the heart here, very much in sympathy with the thoughtful, brooding intensity of his vocalist, Jard van Nes (on what is her second recording of the work).
Van Nes’s device of holding back vibrato at some key points won’t please those who like their contraltos thick and creamy. I thought it was impressive, though - a genuinely musical use of tone-colour. No complaints about the recording either.

When you think Metro, you think rock and f-word roll, right? And wicked DJs in the Smart Bar? And cute, cuddly puppies? OK, maybe not the puppies, but that beagle’s awfully adorable in DJ Brad Owen’s arms on Metro’s new blog section of its Web site (www.metrochicago.com), and he still looks cool. That’s under the Meet the Staff heading. Also on the new blog are features such as Breaking News (this week was helpful info about Lupe Fiasco’s allegedly canceled MySpace party), Demo of the Week, Five Questions (occasional brief interviews), plus MP3s, video clips, behind-the- scenes photos, etc.
This week we discussed fansubbing, talked about the how to get started, what you would need, and even little history on the subject. While we were recording we had a unexpected visitor. Bryce (or “Pryce”… listen to the show to get the reference) showed up when we all thought he was still at school. Don’t fret, we still had other things to talk about, segments, feedback and more. So, join us this week for more of our nerdy discussions… laugh at us and/or with us. Either way you should be “danloading”… right now… if you don’t we’ll make Jefferson leave you many voicemails! Uh-huh that’s what I thought.
