MUSIC
And then there’s Jamiroquai’s Singles 1992-2006, an excuse for everyone to dance around in silly hats. It’s almost as if the record companies had an inkling that there are a mere 38 shopping days to go until Christmas.

Some of my favorite performers this year were Betty, Nedra Johnson, Tribe 8, and Jamie Sieber. I liked these shows for their level of musicality, the ways the performers engaged the audience, and for the way each of them is expanding the concept of “women’s music.”

Dar Williams discussed during her set the reasons why womyn should switch to organic, unbleached cotton tampons and other products such as sea sponges during our periods. The traces of dioxins found in grocery store tampons are hazardous carcinogens; at the same time, the male-owned “feminine hygiene product” industry is making an astounding profit off our bodies. Williams considered that the organic products are more expensive than mainstream ones, so she offered a few hilarious possibilities for overcoming the increased expense. One suggestion was to give female loved ones packages of woman-safe tampons for birthday and seasonal gifts. For her personal contribution, she stopped at every health food store and co-op on her way to the festival and cleared their shelves of boxes of unbleached tampons. At this point her traveling companions walked down the catwalk with an enormous basket full of tampons and began wildly flinging them into the audience. Gleeful womyn rushed the stage to scoop up flying tampons!
Tribe 8 returned for the night stage this year. The audience was noticeably smaller than other nights because many women didn’t attend the performance. I hadn’t been to one of their shows before so I looked forward to seeing what all the fuss was about from previous years. Yes, Lynn Breedlove hacked off a dildo on stage in Hothead Paisan fashion. I had a visceral jolt of fascination and revulsion watching her saw at the big dildo with her huge, bright silver knife — an effect the whole show seems intended to engender. I enjoyed the show — it was energetic, joyful and participative even while it fiercely expressed their anger about being women in a patriarchal world. Many women can relate to their first song, “The Men’s Room is Down the Hall.” In this song Breedlove challenges those who judge her for not conforming to patriarchal norms of how a woman should dress and act.
Tribe 8 performed a song near the end of their set, however, which was very difficult and disturbing. During the song, Breedlove acted out forcing a woman (Nomy Lamm) to give her a blow job (she was wearing a dildo outside of her jeans for the song). The percentage of women in society, and at the Festival, who have been violated and scarred at some time in their lives by being forced to sexually serve men is incredibly high. This song didn’t seem particularly healing or insightful, even if it is intended to express anger at abuse and rape. The price of the song, measured in the pain it caused many women by compromising their feeling of safety at the Festival, was too high.
One thing I liked about Tribe 8, however, was the way they participated in the Festival. At the end of their performance, instead of playing their encore and leaving the stage, the band members dropped their instruments and dove into the mosh pit where the Festies held them aloft and “surfed” them around. When they dove into the mosh pit their roles were transformed from a group of performers to individual participants. They became real; they weren’t just musical icons to hold aloft and look at like a pretty paperweight. Several times over the week I saw members of the band on the trails, and Val said she saw some of them attending workshops.

The 23-year old from Dumfries who spent his adolescent years making music at the Calvinharrisbeats Studio - otherwise known as his bedroom - already has a collaboration with Kylie and two Top 10 singles under his belt. Amy Winehouse, too, clings on in the Top 10 at No 6. Last week, Back to Black became the 126th album to sell more than 1 million copies since the turn of the century and the 25th on that list by a female solo artist.
