In a near 20-year career, that has encompassed literature, music and acting, Cave has shown himself to be one of the most startling musicians of his generation. His reputation as a craftsman of brooding, almost maniacal songs was cemented in 1996 when he released Murder Ballads. This year he was invited to programme the prestigious Meltdown Festival in London. Over the years he has flitted between London, Los Angeles and Berlin, before settling back in London.

He became the fastest-selling artist in Festival history when he appeared at the Queen’s Hall last year, and his 1999 Flux appearance, this time in the unusual surrounds of Princes Street Gardens, will see him perform a new show. Rumours currently abound as to who will support him in Edinburgh. Tricky and then Portishead were mentioned, but neither is likely to upstage what must be one of the Festival’s most eagerly-awaited performances. Huun Huur Tu, Graffiti, August 6- 30 Two-and-a-half thousand miles east of Moscow lies Tuva, a sparsely-populated area of grassland where, in 1987, American Ted Levin tracked down the strange throat singers he had first heard on an old Russian record. He took them to America in 1993 where they worked with Frank Zappa among others. Since then, they have toured the world and return to Edinburgh to perform their haunting music in the only venue which can match them for beauty and atmosphere.

Oddly, you have elected to shun the easygoing death metal of Sirenia’s Nine Destinies and a Downfall. Such oversights - and the fact that the release of Third Sight’s Golden Shower Hour (I kid you not) has been put back - allows Ricky Wilson ( above) and his Kaiser Chiefs to snatch the top spot with Yours Truly, Angry Mob.
