NORTHERN SOUL - THE TEMPESTS - ‘SOMEDAY’
TEMPESTS hailed from, or around, Charlotte, North Carolina. The group was first set up by two brothers Mike and Roger Bunch. In 1968, “Would You Believe!” album was released on the Smash label, a subsidiary of Mercury records.
At the time of this release, the Tempests consisted of ten members. The leader singer and co-songwriter of ‘Someday’ was Hazel Martin Jr. (1936-2008). He had a powerful and distinctive voice, described by some with “an unforgettable, honey-soaked voice”.
‘Someday’, and other tracks featured on the album, became highly sought after in the early 1980’s on the Northern Soul scene. The track was featured regularly on DJ Guy Hennigan’s playlist at The Top of the World, Stafford. Initial plays of the record in 1983 required the traditional practice of ‘covering-up’. Consequently, the artist was introduced for a brief time as ‘Bobby Paris!’
The Tempests also figured prominently in the Carolina Beach scene.
